INFO

Sylvia Grom was born in Munich in 1964. After her degree as a professional photographer at the Bayerischen Staatslehranstalt für Photographie in Munich in 1988 she assisted various photographers in Germany, including Werner Pawlok.

A strong interest in meeting and sharing with people of different cultures lead to her extensive journeys to Southeast Asia, South America and New Zealand. Deviant concepts of life inspire her curiosity to discover world at large with the utmost detail. She captures the essence quickly at first glance. Her pictures combine the presence of mind and the calmness of her insight with the dynamic of looking further, using a clear-cut pictorial language inspired by natural light. The exposures are dedicated to their topic with precision, yet transparent to other contexts. A distinctive sense of form transmits meaning of the pictures which at first sight may seem foreign, subsequently widening the perceptual radius and enriching the field of vision. Thus it may be that fixed interiors or the private lives of exotic plants are set to unexpected movement.

Even when there are no people visible in the photos, there are still inferences of them, and of their productive impact. Needless to say there is a personal presence in the picture due to Sylvia Grom´s everstartling way of perceiving things. Her insight into the world exposes it to a particular openness and suggests a closer look as well as further contemplation.

Sylvia Grom lives and works in Hamburg as an independent photographer.
